Redcliffe's Kyle Evans is just behind the pace setters as his debut season in the Australian Formula Open championship nears halfway.
The 19-year-old finished fourth in the feature race at Sydney Motorsport Park on May 26 but is third overall with 87 points from three of the seven rounds.
In his sights are leader Miles Bromley (110 points) and Ryan McMillan (107 points) as the series heads to The Bend in South Australia on June 7-9.
Driving the Gilmour Racing/KCK Racing 2011 Dallara Formula 3 car, Evans was showing solid pace going into the Sydney round.
He qualified in third for the opening race on May 25 and set-up to pass Beau Russell for second place but was stopped by a safety car board.
Evans said there were "a couple of opportunities" to overtake following the restart but he was "unable to make it stick".
Evans sill finished in second place on the 3.93km circuit, after penalties were imposed and though on the front row for race two struggled with "cold tyre pace" and a foggy visor.
Bromley managed to get ahead of Evans, who said he was "bogged down" at the start and settled for third.
The feature race saw Russell and McMillan battle for second place, behind Bromley, with Evans close behind but unable to get on the podium.
